While summertime means longer days and hotter nights, it doesn’t necessarily bring with it more revenue. In fact, just as many seasonal workers—such as fruit and vegetable pickers and carpenters—find themselves without a job in the winter months, so too do many teachers and other school workers. The good news is that no matter your income, there are always free things you can do with your partner. The trick is finding a cheap or free babysitter (Grandma?). Here are ten fun and free summer date ideas.
10. Go Swimming
Find a free lake, beach, river, or other nearby area to swim at. If you have a pool at home, that’s all you need. Clothing is optional in that case!
9. Take a Walk in the Park
Try a park you haven’t been to yet. Walk along some trails, or meander through the shade trees.
8. Window Shop
Stroll around and hold hands like smitten teenagers. You don’t need money to try on clothes, laugh at novelty shops, or plan for one another’s birthday gifts.
7. Stargaze
Just throw a blanket out in your yard and…look up! Many observatories also have free nights when they will let the public use their telescopes.
6. Camp Out in the Backyard
If you don’t have a tent, borrow one. Tell scary stories and snuggle.
5. Go on a Picnic
Only bring things you already have in your pantry already.
4. Compete with Each Other
Race to get chores done, run around the block, or get another couple and compete against one another in a three-legged race.
3. Play with Your Kids’ Sporting Equipment
Challenge one another to a game of catch, hockey, volleyball, badminton, or whatever else is on hand. If you have a swimming pool, swim laps together, or just hang out in the water.
2. Play Games or Do a Puzzle
While these might sound more like winter ideas, they can be a lot of fun if done outdoors on a picnic blanket. Or if the heat is too much for you, do them inside. You can even raid your kids’ games and puzzles if you have to—or try out one of their video games if they have them.
1. Have a Home Campfire
What could be more romantic than an outdoor fireplace with the one you love? Set the scene with some logs or newspaper to burn, a blanket or log to cuddle on, and whatever snacks and drinks you have available. Play some light music or just listen to the sounds of nature together. Roast weenies and marshmallows like kids, or just talk lowly in the firelight.
