Valentines Day is just around the corner and it gives you a great opportunity to give the kids something to do to keep them busy while you are hard at work. Depending on the ages of your kids you might want to get the set up done the night before after they are in bed. Things like having to cut out small pieces and then gluing them if you think that they aren't ready for that step yet are a good idea to do so you won't have to waste time doing it during your work hours at home.

  • Don't Rule Out the Sitter Yet...

    Add Comment
Part of staying at home when you are a parent gives you the freedom of having to pay for a sitter or daycare. Having childcare can have a huge impact on your finances and depending on how many children you have that need a sitter, you can end up spending thousands of dollars by time the year is up. Working out of your home does cut the cost down quite a bit. But now that you are home and have the kids 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, you may be starting to miss the days of getting to drop the kids off for a bit.

I love getting to be with my daughter and spending time with her. Being at home I get to be a lot more involved with her everyday milestones and achievements and we do have a much stronger bond together than when I was working outside the house with crazy, inconsistent hours. Now that she is old enough to have her own friends and the desire to play with other kids, I still don't have the huge daycare bill, but she doesn't have to be home all the time with me either.

  • The Importance of "Me Time"

    Add Comment
All work and no play can make for a very unhappy person. Think back to when you worked out of the home and how then you knew that you needed time for yourself, even if it was at the end of the day to unwind. Everyday that you went to work, you built up vacation time to get away. Granted, working from home you don't always have the luxury of a paid week of vacation time, but you still need to take some "me time" into consideration for the sake of sanity.

No matter who your employer is or how many deadlines you have to meet, you can only do so much before you begin to get that "cabin fever" feeling especially when your office is your living room or spare bedroom in you house. There are many different ways that you can find time throughout your day to take a minute for yourself. It doesn't even matter what you are doing as long as it requires that you are doing something for yourself that does not involve work, the house, the kids or the spouse.

  • Grown-Up Time-Out

    Add Comment
Time-outs are used to take time out to let your mind focus on what is at hand. Very useful for kids to take time to reflect and cool down, grown ups can find them very useful for themselves too. Time-outs don't need to be reserved for when you are about ready to blow your top, but also when you hit that point during the day when you find yourself just zoning out at the computer screen frozen in time.

Everyone gets to the point where they just can't focus anymore. When I get to that point, no matter how hard I stare at the computer screen, nothing happens. No matter how much I try to will my fingers to get to work, they rest on the keyboard and there is only a cursor blinking on a blank template. That's when I know that it's time to focus my attention on something else and take a time-out from work.

  • Google and You

Google has become so much more than just a great search engine. Constantly coming up with creations to help everyone make their everyday life a little easier, they have programs that can help you have everything you need in one spot. No matter what your at home job may be, Google has programs out there that can help you and are easy to learn how to use.

A program that I use all the time and for more than working at home is Google Docs. All my files are kept online so they aren't taking up a bunch of space on my computer and I can access them from any computer any where and whenever I want. If I have documents on the computer that were created from Microsoft Office including Excel sheets and PowerPoint, I can upload them to Google Docs or email them to my personal Google Docs email address where it will automatically save it as a Google Doc using the Subject line as the document title without me having to do a thing.

Ever think about writing from home? You may not think that you have the skills but most people think that. The average reader online reads at about the sixth grade reading level so the bar isn't exactly out of the majority's reach and there are several sites that will pay you for content. Several sites that come to mind are Associated Content, Text Broker, Triond and Helium. All that you have to possess to get going on these sites to make money from home is an internet connection and a Pay Pal account to receive your payment. I know that they are legit since I have been writing for them for a few years now for income.

Today you have to call it quits early because like most parents, you have kids that need to get to baseball practice, drama club, dance practice and whatever of the numerous activities that swamp your schedule. You may bring a book with you to get you through practices while your mind drifts to how much work you could be getting done and then left feeling like you just don't have the time. Well guess what, thanks to technology, you do. Over the last few years, technology has been producing tools for people who are on the go all the time, but still need to bring the necessities of work with them. From cell phones to PDAs, there is a solution out there waiting for you to pick up and utilize.

My personal favorite to use is my cell phone. I currently own the T-Mobile Shadow.

  • Entertaining the Kids

    From Henry and Devon 2008

Trying to get work done is hard enough as it is. Having the kids at your ankles wanting your attention non stop isn't going to help make anything any easier. Instead of letting the kids try to find things around the house to do to keep busy, come up with some ideas of your own that they can do. Setting the kids up with things that they can do on their own with limited help from you will give some extra mostly quiet time that you can use to get more work done rather than waiting for the blessed nap time.

  • Setting a Schedule

    Add Comment
Working outside of the house you had a set schedule put in place by your employer. Schedules should be incorporated into work at home as well. Since you are working from home and are  your own boss, now you get the pleasure of making a schedule for yourself that will work for you. Having your day planned out will help your productivity and to reach goals throughout the day and long term.

Sit down and write out a timeline of your day. Include when you get up, when the kids get up, when they need to be at school, when you get started on work, and any other daily task that has a specific time to begin or end. Grab yourself a new daily planner or journal to jot everything down. Starting with daily tasks that already have a specific timeline will help you manage the rest of your "free time" instead of wondering what you should be doing or trying to decide if the dishes need to be done first or if the laundry needs to be switched out.

Staying at home with the kids is by no means an easy job to take on. Combining all the daily tasks that he kids and house entails in combination with making an income to help support your family can at times feel like a never ending struggle that leaves no time for yourself. Being a stay at home parent working from home doesn't have to be that way.

Given the opportunity to work from home to do something you enjoy is a very wonderful thing. In addition to getting the chance to spend more time with your kids, if you budget your time right, you can make a good income and take better care of yourself. Learning how to incorporate your child's needs and yours into your work at home will help you to be more productive instead of feeling overwhelmed and like you could have done more.

As a stay at home parent myself, I have learned the hard way how to budget my time properly. Working during the day is just as important as being there for my child and not letting the house fall to a tornado of a mess. Through trial and error, I have found a way to make it all work.
